Another quick lunchtime session at West Hove.
I'd just read someone asking on the Boards forums "is is possible to plane
in 12kts with a 7.5m sail". Seeing as that's exactly what the weather
stations were reading, I though I'd go and try it (even though I know it's
a pretty sure yes for me).
Got there to find not a breath of wind on the beach, but obviously a bit
more on the water (but certainly no white-caps). Thought I'd go anyway.
In the end it was very up-and-down. In the "ups" it was pretty easy to get
planing on the Manta 115 and my ancient 7.4 NP supersonic, and keep going
through the lulls until the end of each run. In the "downs" there was no
way, and a bigger sail wouldn't have helped. If I turned during a lull I
couldn't get going again.
Nice to be even just blobbing around in the sunshine though.
Coming back in there was quite a bit of shorebreak (it was nearly
high-tide) and I couldn't remember how to land a board with a long fin! As
soon as I'd jumped off on the back of a wave though, I found myself lifting
the kit on my head, carrying it safely in. It's amazing what your brain
remembers subconsciously!
